Does your child struggle in school, and his teacher tells you he may suffer from dyslexia?

There are many symptoms of this disorder that affects 5 to 10% of children at the start of their school years, which represents approximately one pupil per class. Here are the signs.

Symptoms before primary school:

  • Language is learned belatedly
  • The difficulty in learning new words
  • The difficulty in building sentences
  • The struggle to recognize letters
  • A deficient short-term memory

Symptoms during primary school:

  • The difficulty in learning how to read and write
  • Problems of attention, concentration and understanding. The child seems hyperactive or absent
  • The difficulty in differentiating certain words and close letters (m and n, p and b)
  • The struggle to memorize the alphabet or the days of the week
  • The difficulty in spelling words and cutting them into syllables
  • A tendency for your child to consider himself stupid and have a low self-esteem

If you feel that your child has some of these symptoms, he may be suffering from dyslexia. In this case, go see your doctor for a first diagnosis. If your doubt is confirmed, he will advise you to go to a specialist (speech therapist) for further diagnosis.
